Mestre Cobra

Mestre Cobra has dedicated the last 23 years of his life to the promotion of Capoeira Angola. He co-founded the Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho in 1982 with Mestre Moraes, which has its headquarters in the historic city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He has traveled throughout Europe, the United States and Africa giving music and movement workshops and seminars on Capoeira Angola.

In 1993, Mestre Cobra was invited by the Ausar Auset Society to carry out cultural education programs in Washington, D.C. for children and adolescents. Presently, he enjoys participation by close to 60 students.

In June 1995 Mestre and his students carried out the First International Encounter of Capoeira Angola, and in June 1996 he and his students hosted the Second Encounter. Both encounters were in conjunction with the University of the District of Columbia and the Brazilian American Cultural Institute (BACI). These events brought Masters, students and fans of Capoeira from throughout the U.S. and Brazil together to celebrate the art form and discuss its promotion internationally.

Recently, Mestre Cobra Mansa produced a compact disc of the music of Capoeira Angola on the Smithsonian FOLKWAYS Record Label in conjunction with the Organization of American States. He is also producing a video documentary on the history of Capoeira Angola in conjunction with the University of the District of Columbia.
